Lost L.A. Archives

Hollenbeck Home for the Aged in Boyle Heights on Sept. 6, 1896
The photo above is Hollenbeck Home for the Aged in Boyle Heights on Sept. 6, 1896: A Home for 'fortunate unfortunates'.

I've been reading this once-a-month column for some time now. Its truly fascinating and reiterates that Los Angeles does have history.

The M's grandmother lived at Hollenbeck for the last few years of her life and it was quite a swanky place -- theatre visits, impromptu piano night, bridge club, sports, a hairdressing salon. She loved it there and made huge amounts of friends, and then left strict instructions that no-one could attend her funeral unless they were properly dressed. :-) It's lovely to see the old pictures of the place.

Love,

Oh really, I love that. I'm fascinated by this series - if only the walls could talk. x
